Sunset on the Wanaka-Mt Aspiring Road: As the weeks roll by I have been getting out more and more, exploring what Wanaka has to offer the landscape photographer in me. For those who know me and my photography, mountains are my jam. The famous quote by John Muir sums it up, “The mountains are calling, and I must go.” Luckily for me, Wanaka is at the heart of the Southern Alps, to the North and West lies Mount Aspiring National Park and I can’t wait to hike and camp after the New Year. I suffered a bit of a messy end to my time in Fernie, I busted my left ankle and was hobbling about for the first few weeks in New Zealand, and while I can walk and put my full weight on it, I still have some stiffness and I don’t quite trust it hiking downhill, not yet anyway. Soon. So in the meantime, I have been taking advantage of the long evenings but going for long romantic drives… on my own. This photograph would benefit if I was able to gain some elevation but the road to Treble Cone is closed for the summer, so I stood on a rock, just outside the locked gates, as hundreds of sheep bleated their annoyance at my presence. The light for this photograph was spot on, patchy, diffused and hitting different parts of the mountain as the cloud shifted and allowed sunlight through. I am constantly trying to evolve as a photographer, hone my editing skills, try new techniques in the field and generally try and do something different. Photograph details: 1/80th sec, F8.0, ISO200, 47mm, shot using an Olympus OM-D EM5. This photograph is available to buy and for a short period of time, I have slashed 25% off my normal prices. Happy holidays.

Sunset on the Wanaka-Mt Aspiring Road

I’m currently in beautiful New Zealand and I’m stoked to explore more of this stunning country. However, this Christmas will see my head across the Tasmin Sea to Australia. For all my Aussie friends, it will be my first visit and I can’t wait.

Remember to follow me on Instagram and like Nomads on the Road on Facebook, for the latest on my adventures.

If you are interested in buying any of my photography check out this post, announcing the launch of my photography shop. Or email me at mike@nomadsontheroad.com and we can discuss your options.

I am in the process of designing a new site, focused more on the photography side of things. I’ll still be blogging but I would like to integrate my photography shop into this main site. Watch this space.
