Sunset in Wanaka, New Zealand: Here I am back in my favourite town in New Zealand, yet as I stare at this beautiful mountain scene, I feel more alone than ever. My life in Fernie was one of the family dinners, nights in the Kodiak, long drives in the backcountry, photography missions to my special lookout spots and a seemingly weekly trip to Yamagoya. I don’t have a place, metaphorically or physically, in Wanaka yet, I’m working on it but I don’t know where I fit in here. Eight years ago when I lived here, I could rent a room for around $80 a week, now I’m going to be paying $200 upwards. I started work this week and I’m back in the housekeeping game. It doesn’t thrill me but the wage is good, the people seem decent and I get to walk the lakefront most evening, taking in these scenes. If this is my life for the next 10 months, it ain’t so bad. Confessional time. I seem tohave this issue where I can’t live in the present. I’m always thinking about the next thing coming in my life. Last winter in Tignes, I couldn’t enjoy the now, I was focused on Fernie and New Zealand. Now I’m in New Zealand and all I can think about is going back to Fernie. You see the constant theme here. Fernie. She is in my head forever. It’s hard to explain to people just how much this unique town means to me, my friends are my family there, either transplants from across the globe or locally born and bred, it doesn’t matter. We all have a shared love this special part of the Kootenays. I know many who share the same feelings for their ‘own’ towns. Nelson, Revelstoke, Kimberley, Golden, the list goes on. Photograph details: 13 sec, F11.0, ISO100, 60mm, shot using an Olympus OM-D EM5. This photograph is available for purchase through my photography shop, check it out, here. This photograph will only be available in 18×12.
