Downtown Auckland, New Zealand: Kia Ora from Aotearoa (New Zealand). It’s been nine years since I set foot in this beautiful country, and a lot has changed in that time. Mainly me. I am stoked to be back in New Zealand but I found my first week here so incredibly hard, I don’t want to say I was depressed but I was certainly feeling sorry for myself. I had once again left Fernie and it broke my heart more than ever, old friends and new mean so much to me there. It’s hard to explain, I’m not usually one to be this open on the blog, but I think I need to be honest and explain that a life of travel and photographing beautiful scenes isn’t always easy. I turned 36 this month and my friends threw me an amazing party and I received messages from all over the world wishing me the best. Yet birthdays, or at least the hungover days following my birthday, are a time of reflection for me. Looking back at my year and I can’t help but think holy shit, what a year, good and bad. I lived in Tignes, France for the winter, I spent some time in England with my family, staying with mum and visiting dad in his nursing home. I met my beautiful niece, Sophie, and became even better mates with my little nephew, Alex. It’s so hard being away from the family and I feel pangs of guilt knowing that they are going through some tough times without me. But they understand my love for the mountains and the sense of freedom and solace I feel breathing in that crisp mountain air. I know in my heart where I want to lay my head for the rest of my life, I just need to find a way to make it happen. In the meantime, New Zealand is an excellent place to be. Anyways, back to the photography side of things, this photograph was taken from Devonport, across the harbour from downtown Auckland. I had made this ferry crossing a couple of times, scoping out locations and just generally exploring. This particular photograph was taken from the promenade looking across the harbour. I will be sharing a few more photographs from Auckland in a new photo essay. Photograph details: 1 sec, F8.0, ISO100, 70mm, shot using an Olympus OM-D EM5.
