Fernie Polar Peak is the highest point of the resort, it dominates the hill. This season my good friend Jason Buck is up above the clouds most mornings, even before the rest of us have stirred from our drunken slumber; for Jason is a Polar Peak maintenance lift operator. When the weather closes in on Polar Jason and a couple of the ski patrollers slap on their skins and hike their way up the imposing peak, battling near-zero visibility and gale force winds. On clear days Jason will be sled up and prepare Polar Peak for coming crowds – on a clear day, the view from Polar Peak is second to none.
