2012 in Travel Writing – the Best Canadian Writers
How quickly a year flies by… it seems like only yesterday that I was sitting at my desk writing a post about my favourite travel writing of 2011… and now with 2012 coming to an end, its time to highlight my favourite pieces from the past year; and they all just happen to be by Canadian writers or those living in Canada.
In a year that I fell in love with the mountain town of Fernie, travelled to Central America and experienced the best skiing of my life, I want to look back at other’s inspiring travel writing.
Five Canadian Writers who rock
Candice from Candice Does The World almost died this year – scary as fuck read about surviving a car crash in Canada. Maybe I should slow down when driving to the ski hill in wintry conditions – “That time I almost died last week”.
Jeannie from Nomadic Chick featured on my list year last and once again proves just why she is why one of my favourite travel writers out there. “Facing Discrimination in China” is another example of Jeannie’s ability to delve deep into a subject and give the reader pause for thought.
Ayngelina from Bacon is Magic was one of the first travel bloggers I started following, travel blogging isn’t just about the writing, it’s also about the photography. Don’t get me wrong, this girl can spin a yarn but her photo essay of “Untouched Okanagan” is special, capturing the beauty of a Canadian desert.
Jodi from Legal Nomads wrote an awesome piece on “homesickness and long term travel”. A subject I can easily relate to. It’s been over a year since I’ve been home and while I feel those pangs of nostalgia every now and then, I’m happier than ever.
Finally, Carlo, from Vagabonderz, authored a piece which hit home. “Why I decided to stop drinking” is an honest look at our drinking culture and why it was time for Carlo to stop drinking.
